Marriott International Named Top Employer in China

Employees at the Portman Ritz-Carlton, ShanghaiMarriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) has been named one of “China’s Top Employers 2012” by the CRF Institute. It is the only hotel management company in the winners list.

The 32 award winners including Marriott International have been selected from a pool of more than 920 organizations based on the results of a thorough research and evaluation process.  According to the CRF Institute, these companies are recognized for their outstanding performance in various aspects of human resources such as employee benefits, corporate culture and talent development.

“In view of the robust expansion of Marriott International in China, developing talent is crucial to our present and future success. We are committed to identify, train, support and set up clear career paths for our executives and help them develop into future Marriott leaders,” said Henry Lee, Senior Vice President, Greater China of Marriott International.

Currently Marriott International manages approximately 60 hotels and employs 15,500 associates in China. Its portfolio will increase to 100 hotels by 2015, making it be one of the largest hotel groups in this country.

Courtyard by Marriott’s Survey Reveals Americans’ Favorite Super Bowl Party Snacks and Where We’ll Gather for Super Bowl XLVI

Courtyard by Marriott, the Official Hotel Sponsor of the NFL, shares the results of its Super Bowl survey, revealing what party-goers chose as their favorite game-day foods and where they’ll be when Super Bowl XLVI kicks off on February 5.

According to the survey commissioned by Courtyard and conducted by Toluna, party hosts who want to plan a crowd-pleasing menu should put chips and dip atop their game-day shopping lists. Sixty-one percent of Americans chose the dish as their favorite food to eat on Super Bowl Sunday.  Other favorites include pizza (55 percent), nachos (41 percent), subs/sandwiches (38 percent), barbecue (chicken, ribs, etc.) (37 percent), fried finger foods (35 percent) and burgers (32 percent).   Twenty-eight percent named vegetables or other options. 

Courtyard’s Bistro offers morning and evening food and beverage at more than 400 newly renovated Courtyard hotels nationwide.  Fans will find many favorite foods on the Bistro menu, including spinach and artichoke dip, hummus, buffalo wings, turkey BLT and a cheddar French dip, among many others. 

“Courtyard customers love professional football, and through our NFL partnership, we are able to create exciting ways to provide our guests with a great sports experience,” said Janis Milham, Vice President and Global Brand Manager for Courtyard by Marriott.  “The Bistro is an ideal option for on the go travelers to work, recharge and relax while grabbing a bite, watching the latest game and connecting with other fans.”

The Courtyard survey also revealed that watching the game in the company of others is a tradition likely to continue.  Nearly a third (29 percent) of Americans watching the Super Bowl will catch the game at a family member or friend’s house.  Courtyard’s revitalized lobbies feature multi-purpose public spaces perfect for watching games with others, without having to leave the hotel.

In addition to the survey results, Courtyard will be showcasing its refreshed lobby at the Indiana Convention Center during the NFL Experience, pro football’s interactive theme park open to the public Friday, January 27 through Saturday, February 4.  Courtyard is holding NFL player autograph signings with NFL stars including Cam Newton, Matthew Stafford, DeMarco Murray, Mark Ingram and more.  Dhani Jones, former linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals and host of Travel Channel’s Dhani Tackles the Globe, will also be in attendance.

The Courtyard by Marriott Super Bowl Survey was commissioned by Courtyard by Marriott and conducted using Toluna’s field services. The study was conducted online and reached a national sample of 1,053 American adults ages 18 and older. The margin of error for the total sample is ±3.1% at the 95% confidence level.

AC Hotels By Marriott Announce First Hotel in France

Brand Poised To Expand Across Europe and Latin America

AC Hotel LogoMarriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) today announced plans to open the first new hotel to join the AC Hotels by Marriott portfolio since the launch of the joint venture and new co-brand last year. Joining over 80 existing AC Hotels by Marriott throughout Spain, Italy and Portugal, the 143-room Elysee Palace Hotel in Nice will be rebranded AC Hotel Nice following an extensive renovation. The hotel is expected to open in early 2013 under a management agreement with SNC Hoche Promotion.

DAVOS-KLOSTERS, SWITZERLAND - In a global study released today at the World Economic Forum, it was revealed that international travel is considered even more important than the Internet, TV/movies, or political diplomacy at stimulating the economy and breaking down cultural barriers.  The independent study was conducted by Penn Schoen Berland on behalf of Marriott International (NYSE: MAR) and included the views of 1,100 global travelers and opinion leaders from eight countries, including Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. [Download Study.] [See below for slideshow of additional images.]
Ninety-six percent of respondents, who ranged in age from under 35 to over 50 years old, believed that travel and tourism stimulates the economy, while 77 percent felt that “the more people experience other countries and cultures, the more peace will spread.” 

“I believe we are entering a “Golden Age of Travel,” where opportunities to do business and travel abroad are opening up like never before,” said Arne Sorenson, Marriott International’s CEO-elect and current president, pointing to the number of international arrivals, which have doubled in the last 20 years and will reach 1 billion in 2012 (UN World Tourism Organization).  “Travel opens up your mind, your heart and your wallet. This survey shows it is also a powerful form of soft diplomacy in the world today.”

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the industry is predicted to account for an extra 69 million net jobs by 2021, including direct, indirect and induced employ¬ment-- almost 80 percent of which will be in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.  Put another way, one American job is created for every 35 international visitors to the U.S., according to the U.S. Travel Association.  Marriott plans to fill about 60,000 jobs in 2012 alone, with two-thirds of those being in countries outside the U.S., where more than 50 percent of its hotel pipeline resides. 

WTTC estimates that total contributions of Travel & Tourism to the global gross domestic product (GDP) are forecast to rise by 4.2 percent annually to US $9.2 trillion by 2021.  Visitor exports—or the amount visitors spend in a given foreign country—will increase 6.6 percent annually through 2021, rising to US $1.8 trillion by 2021.  As an example, in New York City alone, Brazilians spent a total of $1.63 billion, topping the $1.42 billion spent by travelers from the U.K., the $1.27 billion spent by Canadians and the $1.1 billion spent by Italians, according to NYC & Co., the city’s tourism board.

“We already knew that travel and tourism have a major impact on the economy, but now we also know that it can change people’s views worldwide,” says Mark Penn, CEO of Penn Schoen Berland and CEO of Burson-Marsteller.  “International travelers advance people’s understanding of different cultures and reinforce all that we as humans have in common with each other.”

Marriott Chefs Feel the Heat in Culinary Challenge Final

Forest of Arden, a Marriott Hotel & Country Club Team Crowned Champions of Marriott’s Prestigious Black Box Final in Brussels.

LONDON—Heralded as the ultimate culinary challenge, Forest of Arden, a Marriott Hotel & Country Club was crowned the winner of Marriott International’s coveted Culinary Black Box competition, which took place at the Brussels Marriott Hotel last Friday evening. Competing at the finals were six teams of food and beverage associates Marriott-branded hotels across Europe – Renaissance Moscow Hotel, Frankfurt Marriott Hotel, Vienna Marriott Hotel, Courtyard Neuilly and Courtyard Saint Denis, Amsterdam Marriott Hotel and Forest of Arden, a Marriott Hotel & Country Club. The Black Box finalist teams each developed their own three-course menu from the surprise ingredients found inside the “Black Box” which was presented at a glamorous gala dinner. The winning menu included a trio of salmon, loin of venison and lemon meringue tart. Teams were also judged on creativity and appearance of their stunning table presentations.

Over the past 18 months, the Culinary Black Box Competition has brought together Marriott associates across Europe, specializing in the kitchen and service disciplines, to educate and train on Marriott’s CookSmart philosophy and service standards. CookSmart is a philosophy of successful cooking which includes four key elements: perfect execution, great ingredients, kitchen technique and focus on the guest.

Simon Beaumont, director of culinary for Marriott International in Europe said, “We are delighted to have brought together the best of our chefs across Europe for the Culinary Black Box Final, the first of its kind for Marriott. Over 100 Marriott hotels across Europe have participated in regional competitions and it was great to see Marriott culinary excellence at its best with the Black Box Champions from Forest of Arden, as well as the five runner-up teams here in Brussels last week. The challenge was a great opportunity for the Marriott chefs and service associates to express their creativity, as well as their culinary skills, service standards and team work.”

The culinary creations from the six hotel teams were tried and tested at a formal dinner the Olympia Bourse Ballroom at the recently renovated Brussels Marriott Hotel, with a judging panel including – Simon Beaumont director of culinary, Robert Junkte director of events and Jörg Kröter director of food and beverage.

Marriott International to Open Three Hotels in Sochi, Russia

Marriott Krasnaya Polyana HotelCompany Announces it Will Open New JW Marriott, Marriott Hotels & Resorts and Courtyard by Marriott Hotels in Sochi, Russia, Site of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

London – Marriott International (NYSE:MAR) announced today it will open three new hotels in Sochi, Russia, site of the 2014 Winter Olympic games, under franchise agreements negotiated through NBB Development CJSC. The three hotels will be managed by Interstate Management Services.
The hotels are the:

• 150-room JW Marriott Sochi Golf Resort (expected to open early 2014)
• 398-room Marriott Krasnaya Polyana Hotel (expected to open late 2013) (pictured)
• 345-room Courtyard by Marriott Sochi Plaza Hotel (expected to open late 2013)

Located on the Black Sea, Sochi is Russia’s only subtropical resort city and one of its largest and most popular resort destinations, attracting visitors from throughout Russia and beyond. Sprawling along nearly 100km of seacoast and 45km inland to the foothills of the Caucasus Mountain range, the City of Sochi lies within Sochi National Park.

JW Marriott Sochi Golf Resort
Joining Marriott International’s luxury collection of the most distinctive and elegant hotels bearing the Marriott name, the luxurious 150-room JW Marriott Sochi Golf Resort will open
in early 2014 as Russia’s first golf resort hotel in a resort destination.  Surrounded by the lush forests of Sochi National Park, the resort will boast a championship 18-hole golf course and golf club, providing a superb venue for international golf tournaments and the only year-round golf practice facility in Russia. A destination in and of itself, the hotel will feature a 700 square meter spa, two swimming pools, tennis courts and state-of-the art sports facilities. For dining, the hotel will boast a choice of casual and specialty restaurants, pool bar and bistro, as well as an exclusive golf club house and lounge.

A skier’s paradise, the Gorky Gorod ski resort boasts a long annual ski season from November to May. Visitors to Gorky Gorod +540 will be transported by cable car and attractions will include a Greek style amphitheatre, water park, congress centre, pedestrian shopping area and an Olympic Hall of Fame. Boasting two restaurants, a lobby bar and 1,225 square meters of meeting space, the hotel complex will also feature indoor and outdoor swimming pools and state-of-the art fitness centre.

Located in the centre of Sochi, the 345-room Courtyard by Marriott Sochi Plaza will be part of the complete re-development of a former hotel building that will now also feature apartments, offices and shops. Marriott Rises on Fortune's 2012 '100 Best Companies to Work For' List

For the 15th consecutive year, Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) earned top marks on FORTUNE magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For" List, rising 14 places from 71st to 57th.  This distinction maintains Marriott's "All Star" status as one of only 13 companies that have appeared on every list since it launched in 1998.  Marriott was the highest ranked lodging company, and the highest ranked of the four companies with 100,000 or more employees.

Methodology
To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America; 280 firms participated in this year’s survey. More than 246,000 employees at those companies responded to a survey created by the institute, a global research and consulting firm operating in 45 countries around the world. Two-thirds of a company’s score is based on the results of the institute’s Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management’s credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The other third is based on responses to the institute’s Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs, and diversity efforts. After evaluations are completed, if news about a company comes to light that may significantly damage employees’ faith in management, we may exclude it from the list.  Any company that is at least five years old and has more than 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible.
