Marriott International To Sell ExecuStay Corporate Housing Brand To Oakwood Worldwide

Weston St AndrewsOakwood and Marriott also enter into a long-term reciprocal preferred provider agreement.

Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) and Oakwood Worldwide, a privately held company, today announced that they have signed an agreement for Marriott to sell its ExecuStay corporate and temporary apartment housing business to Oakwood, which is the leading global provider of corporate housing and serviced apartments, with locations in more than 50 countries.

ExecuStay offers furnished apartments in more than 700 locations across the U.S.  Typically accommodating stays of 30 days or longer, ExecuStay provides a full residential experience, taking care of everything from utilities to furnishings, with conveniences such as free Wi-Fi, a full kitchen and laundry facilities.

As part of the transaction Oakwood will maintain ExecuStay as a separate brand offering.  The parties also signed an eight-year reciprocal preferred provider agreement under which Marriott International will become the preferred hotel provider for Oakwood corporate housing and serviced apartment customers who need a hotel stay, and Marriott will recognize Oakwood as the preferred provider of corporate housing and serviced apartments to Marriott customers.   As part of the preferred provider agreement, ExecuStay customers will also continue to earn Marriott Rewards guest loyalty program points for stays at ExecuStay apartments.

David Grissen, president – The Americas for Marriott International, said, “We are delighted to reach this agreement with Oakwood, the world’s premier corporate housing and serviced apartments provider.  We believe this agreement, which includes a significant continuing relationship, will substantially benefit each of our two companies as well as our respective customer bases, and is the best of both worlds for the ExecuStay brand and its franchise partners.”

Grissen continued, “We are proud of ExecuStay.  Since we acquired the business in 1999, the brand has evolved into an industry leader offering a tremendous product to customers.  Notwithstanding this progress, over time it became clear that ExecuStay’s business model of leasing residential premises to customers was meaningfully different from Marriott International’s long-term business strategy. ExecuStay’s association with Oakwood will provide it with new opportunities to prosper.”

“This is a great day for both Oakwood and ExecuStay,” said Howard Ruby, chairman and founder of Oakwood Worldwide.  “We have been interested in ExecuStay for some time, and Marriott has developed a brand that is a leader in the corporate housing and serviced apartment space.  In addition, our long-term preferred partnership with Marriott will benefit both companies and our respective clients.”

“This acquisition will expand our footprint and we’ll be even better-equipped to provide our customers with innovative solutions that best fit their changing needs,” said Ric Villarreal, president of Oakwood Worldwide. “We will leverage the same best practices that have made Oakwood and ExecuStay industry leaders as we move our organization forward.”

The financial terms of the sale were not disclosed, and are not material to Marriott International. Conclusion of the transaction, which is subject to normal and customary closing conditions, is expected by the end of April.

For future ExecuStay reservations please continue to contact ExecuStay at www.execustay.com, or via the ExecuStay customer service line: 888.340.2565.  Following the transaction closing, customers can continue to access brand reservations at www.execustay.com  or at Oakwood Worldwide at www.oakwood.com

Marriott Aims To Double Footprint In The Caribbean And Latin America By 2017

Cartagena MarriottMore than 70 additional hotels and 14,000 new jobs planned in the next five years.

Heralding a "golden age of travel," Marriott International (NYSE:MAR) plans to double the number of hotels in the Caribbean and Latin America within the next five years. Arne Sorenson, the new CEO of Marriott International, will make the announcement today at the Americas CEO Summit in Cartagena, Colombia, adding that the number of jobs at Marriott hotels in the region is expected to increase from 13,000 to 27,000 by the end of 2017.

The company also said it expects to double its presence in Colombia with the additions of Marriott hotels in both Cartagena and Cali.

This year’s hotel openings in the region showcase the company's broad portfolio of top brands, including the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in the Americas at Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico to the JW Marriott in Cusco, Peru and the Courtyard by Marriott at Mexico City Airport.
Currently, Marriott has 35 hotels signed and under development in the Caribbean and Latin America.  These include The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba, The Ritz-Carlton, Panama City (Panama), JW Marriott Cusco (Peru), Port-au-Prince Marriott Hotel (Haiti) and the Renaissance Santiago (Chile).  By 2017, Marriott envisions its portfolio in the region rising to over 140 hotels and 30,000 rooms either opened or in the development pipeline.

Today, Marriott International is represented with 69 hotels in 25 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America. Nine of Marriott’s 18 brands are currently represented in the region:  The Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott (luxury); Marriott Hotels & Resorts (upscale); Renaissance Hotels and Autograph Collection (lifestyle); Courtyard by Marriott (upper moderate);  Marriott Executive Apartments and Residence Inn by Marriott (extended stay); and Fairfield by Marriott (moderate).

“Latin America is booming, in terms of economic growth and political and institutional stability, which is creating a promising business climate,” said Mr. Sorenson, whose title is president and CEO. “The rising middle class throughout the region is eager to travel to new places and do business on the road. Worldwide, we're seeing a golden age of travel, and Latin America is at the forefront.  This, when combined with the strong performance and preference of our brands in the gateway markets, provides tremendous opportunity for Marriott's world class brands and service."

“This is an exciting time for hotel development in Latin America; the growing regional demand and broadening market, combined with the lack of consistent domestic hotel product and service, represents a large opportunity to develop upscale branded hotels as well as multi-unit moderate tier development platforms with local partners in the region,” said Laurent De Kousemaeker, chief development officer, Caribbean and Latin American Region, for Marriott International.

Note: The statements about the numbers of new hotels and rooms we expect to add by 2017 are “forward looking statements" within the meaning of federal securities laws, not historical facts, and are subject to a number of risks and uncertainties, including the continuation and pace of the economic recovery; supply and demand changes for hotel rooms; competitive conditions in the lodging industry; relationships with clients and property owners; the availability of capital to finance hotel growth and refurbishment; and other risk factors identified in our most recent annual report on Form 10-K; any of which could cause actual results to differ materially from those expressed in or implied by our statement. These statements are made as of the date of this press release, and we undertake no obligation to publicly update or revise any forward-looking statement, whether as a result of new information, future events or otherwise.

Algonqueen Cat Matilda Returns to The Algonquin

MatildaResident Feline will Usher in New Era at Renovated Iconic Property with NewPackage.

NEW YORK, NY – The Algonquin Hotel, located on Manhattan’s Club Row at 44th between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, is revealing details about its resident feline, Matilda, and her new accommodation package as the property undergoes its renovations and Matilda prepares to come back and reclaim her throne at the check-in desk.

During renovations, Matilda has been on vacation in upstate New York getting her fill of country life before she heads back to role as Queen of the Algonquin and the Manhattan party circuit. Spending her days checking out local wildlife, napping and preparing for her return to the Algonquin, Matilda is a five year old, blue-eyed Rag Doll that serves as the resident mascot and overseer of the legendary hotel.

“We’ve certainly missed having Matilda around the hotel as our renovations have been under way, but we know, upon her return, she will certainly love the modern Manhattan look to the property that still retains the artistic heritage of the hotel. She’ll feel right at home again soon taking up her residence as our Algonqueen,” said General Manager Gary Budge.

When the Algonquin ushers in its new era this June, the hotel will launch a new Matilda Package that allows for feline fans and guests to enjoy the best of the hotel that Matilda has to offer including a room for two people with continental breakfast, two cocktails in the legendary Blue Bar, a coloring book and feline focused book entitled Fabulous Felines by Sandy Robbins, a plush, stuffed Matilda, delicious bite-sized pieces of swiss chocolate and last but not least, a CATabulous eye mask that will allow you to have the best cat nap in town, just as Matilda would hope for you. The package will be available from $329.00 per night and includes customary city and state sales taxes.

The tradition of having a feline resident at The Algonquin began in the 1930s when a straggly stray cat wandered in through the hotel’s front door looking for food and shelter. Owner Frank Case, the consummate host most famous for first welcoming Dorothy Parker and her friends to start the legendary Algonquin Round Table in the hotel’s bar, welcomed the cat as he did every other guest, and a tradition was born.

On a regular basis, Matilda maintains her Facebook (“MatildatheAlgonquinCat” ) and Twitter (@Algonqueen) pages, and answers fan mail from all over the world (via her email address matildaalgonquincat@algonquinhotel.com). Her first order of business upon returning to the Algonquin when it re-opens its doors, will be to plan her annual Birthday Party this coming August, which also serves as a fundraiser for New York Save – Save Animals in Veterinary Emergency.

About The Algonquin Hotel
The Algonquin Hotel is located in the heart of midtown Manhattan on Club Row at 44th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, just steps from Broadway’s Theatres and world-class shopping. To support the company’s plans to add 30,000 rooms in 2012, Marriott expects to hire 60,000 employees this year alone.

Marriott offers special benefits that support hourly associates.  These include training and promotion of hourly workers (more than 3,000 managers began their careers at Marriott in hourly positions, in addition, thousands more moved laterally, gaining new career experiences); innovation in workplace flexibility and scheduling practices; and multiple programs to help hourly associates gain skills that they say have made an incredible impact in their work and personal lives.

[Pictured: Nona Davis, payroll specialist at the Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington, Va., is a perfect example of the promotion of hourly workers.  Davis started out at Marriott as a housekeeper at the Twin Bridges Marriott.  When management recognized her leadership abilities, she was quickly promoted to housekeeping supervisor at the Crystal City Marriott.  Her incredible dedication to assist colleagues and guests soon inspired managers to offer her an opportunity in Human Resources.]

The survey, conducted by the Working Mother Research Institute, found that women at the winning companies earned 56% of all promotions from hourly non-manager to non-exempt manager positions. One hundred percent of the companies named to the list offered their hourly workers personal and family health insurance benefits.

Jennifer Owens, editorial director of Working Mother Media, says, “This year’s Best Companies exemplify best-practices workplaces and cultures to help female hourly workers thrive. Most of the companies use the 70-20-10 rule: Focus 70% of your time on getting on-the-job experience, 20% on developing internal relationships and networks and 10% on formal training.”

Marriott will be recognized in May at a special awards ceremony called the “National Conference Supporting Hourly Workers 2012,” held at The Mayflower Renaissance Washington, DC hotel.
