Marriott Foundation Sponsors China Hospitality Education Initiative Teaching Conference

CHEI-Logo-JPEG80 educators from across China attend first-ever hospitality teaching conference in Tianjin.

Bethesda, Md., USA – June 24, 2014 – This month, 80 hospitality educators from 38 vocational schools and universities across mainland China attended the first Marriott China Hospitality Education Initiative (CHEI) Teaching Conference at the Renaissance Tianjin Lakeview Hotel. CHEI is funded with a commitment by The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation of 40.5 million RMB ($6.5 million) over five years to help create world-class hospitality education that leads to life-changing careers for youth in China’s booming travel and tourism industry.

CHEI Teaching Conference Group Photo resizeDeveloped in partnership with global academic and industry experts, CHEI enables Chinese educators and students to gain industry knowledge and real-world experience in hotel operations. CHEI’s portfolio of programs, piloted in 2013-2014, include faculty internships at local hotels, international fellowships, guest lectures, hotel field trips, research grants and hospitality curricula. Within five years, the foundation anticipates that CHEI will have an impact on 20,000 students annually. Download image.

The three-day teaching conference opened with a reception attended by educators and representatives from the Marriott Foundation, Marriott International, and San Diego State University. Following a lion dance and ribbon-cutting ceremony, Debbie Marriott Harrison, a trustee of the foundation and Marriott International’s global officer of culture and business councils, presented the keynote address about the Marriott family and its deep history and passion for supporting hospitality education. General sessions and interactive workshops were presented by educators and leaders from Marriott International and San Diego State University’s L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Tianjin Foreign Studies University graciously hosted a dinner for all attendees at its downtown campus. The conference wrapped up with a gala dinner and presentation of participation certificates for all attendees.

“Bringing together hospitality educators from across China to learn from, and network with, industry leaders and their peers was a wonderful way to wrap up the first year of piloting CHEI programs,” said Anne Gunsteens, executive director, The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation. “It was exciting to meet educators and hear stories of the impact that CHEI programs are already having on their students.”

“This conference was the perfect opportunity to bring CHEI to life in front of program constituents through education, networking and motivation,” said Carl H. Winston, managing director of CHEI and director, San Diego State University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. “For most attendees, this conference provided the first opportunity to network with so many of their peers.”

“As CHEI’s initial industry advisor, Marriott International and our hotels in China are excited to open our doors to educators and students to learn first-hand about hotel operations,” said Simon Cooper, president of Asia Pacific for Marriott International. “We were delighted to participate in, and host, the first CHEI Teaching Conference.”

“I gained great insights into the hospitality industry and the exciting opportunities available to my students,” said Josie Zhou, teacher of hospitality at Wuhan College of Foreign Languages and Foreign Affairs. “The conference sessions provided a bridge for mutual exchange with industry leaders and my peers. This experience will enhance my teaching methods and create a better future for my students.”

Throughout 2014, CHEI will continue to offer guest lectures and field trips for faculty and students. In July, summer internships will commence for more than 30 teachers from various schools across China. This fall, three teachers will spend a semester as international CHEI fellows at hospitality schools in the United States. CHEI will also continue to pilot its unique, China-centric hospitality curricula modules.

Marriott Hotels Puts the World in Your Hands – Expands Mobile Check-in and Checkout for Marriott Rewards Members to Nearly 500 Hotels

CheckIn_CHFor today’s global traveler, their smartphone is what links them to their world. To put even more power in the hands of travelers, Marriott Hotels, the flagship brand of Marriott International (NASDAQ:MAR) has expanded mobile check-in and checkout globally for Marriott Rewards members to nearly 500 hotels. This means Marriott Rewards guests from London to Dubai to Shanghai to Mexico City to New York can simply check-in and checkout using the wildly popular Marriott Mobile app on their smartphone. First introduced last year at its hotels in the United States and Canada, Marriott Hotels mobile check-in and checkout is now available in every continent where its nearly 500 properties are located.*

With the Marriott Mobile app, check-in and checkout is simple to use. Marriott Rewards members receive a push notification on their Apple iPhones or Android devices after 4 pm on the day before their arrival alerting them they can check-in. Then they receive an automatic notification when their room is ready. Because payment information is stored within members profiles, guests simply walk up to the expedited mobile check-in desk where their pre-programmed key card will be waiting for them.

CheckOut_ESAt the end of their stays, guests receive a push notification alerting them mobile checkout is available. Upon completion, guests will then be prompted to provide an email address where their bill will be sent, allowing them to bypass the front desk.

“When we first began testing mobility, we went straight to the experts, our guests, who told us they wanted the power to check-in and checkout on their smartphones,” said Paul Cahill, senior vice president of brand management for Marriott Hotels. “Among Millennials, nine out of ten who tried mobile check-in and checkout for the first time gave it high marks and said they would use it again for their next stay.”

The Marriott Mobile app can be downloaded from the Apple iTunes Store, Google Play and by going to:  http://www.marriott.com/marriott/mobile-apps.mi. These sites also enable easy enrollment in the Marriott Rewards and travelers can learn more about mobility at Marriott Hotels at http://travel-brilliantly.marriott.com/.

The Marriott Hotels mobile innovation does not stop at check-in and checkout. For a glimpse into the future, 15 mobile “incubator” hotels in the U.S. are among the first in the industry enabling guests to text service requests, such as additional towels and pillows and valet service, and chat with the hotel’s hosts in real time.  Marriott Hotels is on a journey of transformation to make travel brilliant. Other innovations include the fully re-designed Greatroom lobby that features an open and flexible lobby space for guests to use for business, leisure or time to themselves. Stylish, modern, comfortable and welcoming, the Greatroom lobby offers all day menus for light bites and meals and full access to technology from free Wi-Fi to electrical power points. Additionally, as the industry leader in hosting meetings, Marriott Hotels has introduced new concepts for the mobile worker including Meetings Imagined, the Meeting Services App (Red Coat Direct) and Workspace on Demand.

*Regulations in Armenia, France, Italy, Kazakhstan, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Spain and Turkey allow for mobile check-in but require guests to checkout with the front desk. Mobile check-in and checkout is not available in Japan.

Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel guest roomAll 360 guest rooms and the hotel’s signature ZK restaurant are located on the top floors of the building, boasting breathtaking views of Osaka from every angle and positioning the hotel as the new landmark of this dynamic city.

With a prime location in front of Osaka Abenobashi Station, the Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel offers the most direct service to Kansai International Airport, in just 30 minutes, as well as providing convenient access to all other points in Osaka, the Kansai region and beyond.

Simon Cooper, Marriott International’s president and managing director for Asia Pacific, commented: “Marriott International’s model for growth around the world is to work with local partners who have the right local expertise, knowledge and skills, and who share our own values and culture. In Miyako Hotels & Resorts we have found an excellent partner to work with here in Japan and we are excited to open the first Marriott Hotels property in this very important city.”

Masahiko Torii, general manager of the Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel explained, “Marriott Hotels and Japan’s Miyako Hotels & Resorts are delighted to have joined together to proudly offer the highest standards of global hospitality, but with a Japanese touch, in Osaka.  Our new hotel is ready to welcome guests from Japan and all over the world, and we anticipate the Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel will become the most prominent new landmark and symbol of Osaka.

Offering spectacular views of the city, the hotel’s 360 spacious rooms (each an average of 38 sq meters) are located on the 38th to 55th floors, and include six suites and 33 premium rooms. The executive floor rooms are served by a dedicated executive lounge, the largest of its kind in Japan, with a 10 meter high ceiling and floor to ceiling windows. It provides an open, airy and relaxing space to unwind and enjoy the view while enjoying light refreshments and snacks.

The hotel’s meeting room facilities are high tech and Wi-Fi enabled throughout, ideal for handling all kinds of meetings. There is one larger meeting room (230 sq. meters) and six small meeting rooms (32 sq. meters), which are perfect for intimate parties and family events.

The Greatroom lobby, lobby lounge and bar are located on the 19th floor.  In addition, the bright open kitchen buffet restaurant, Cooka, offers a wide variety of Japanese and international dishes for all tastes in a casual dining environment. Taking over the entire 57th floor is ZK, a modern, sophisticated restaurant with floor to ceiling windows, serving both authentic Japanese and Western cuisine.  All dishes are made from carefully selected and freshly prepared ingredients, and guests at the counter seats can watch their meals made right in front of them.  There is also a teppanyaki grill table with two additional counters.

As a part of Marriott Hotel’s transformation, the iconic brand has been innovating throughout its hotels globally. Re-designed lobbies and public spaces known as Greatrooms are being rapidly deployed for the next generation of travellers who blend work and play, demand style and substance, and require technology.

With the opening of Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel, Marriott International is poised to meet the growing demand for quality hospitality experiences in Japan ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympics - as well as UNESCO’s announcement in December 2013 recognizing Japanese cuisine as an Intangible Cultural Heritage asset.

Osaka is the gateway and largest city in the Kansai region, serving as a hub for business and leisure travel, and a key component of any itinerary to Japan given its proximity to Nagoya, Kobe and Kyoto.

Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel delivers a full range of guest services appealing to both leisure and business travelers, and its location gives both first-time and repeat visitors to Osaka a wide range of options, from historical sites and museums to shopping and unique dining experiences.
