Marriott Foundation Sponsors China Hospitality Education Initiative Teaching Conference

170 educators from across China attended hospitality teaching conference in Ningbo

Group picture IMG_8903--8x24
Bethesda, Md., USA – July 23, 2015 – Last week, 170 hospitality educators from more than 60 vocational schools and universities across 18 provinces in China gathered at the Ningbo Marriott Hotel to attend the second Marriott China Hospitality Education Initiative (CHEI) Teaching Conference. CHEI, a project of The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, is funded with a commitment of 40.5 million RMB ($6.5 million) over five years. It engages educators and industry leaders in enhancing hospitality education, leading to life-changing careers for youth in China’s booming travel and tourism industry.

Since CHEI’s implementation two years ago, nearly 19,000 Chinese students and their teachers have attended hotel field trips and guest lectures by industry leaders. More than 160 teachers have completed faculty internships at local hotels and hospitality fellowships at U.S. universities. CHEI estimates its programs overall are having an impact on 28,000 hospitality students, as teachers incorporate knowledge gained through real-world experiences, new teaching techniques and CHEI learning resources into their classrooms.

The four-day CHEI Teaching Conference opened with a welcome reception and a masterful sand animation telling the story of J. Willard Marriott and Alice S. Marriott, co-founders of the Foundation and Marriott International, and the Marriott family’s deep passion for education. The conference offered educators first-hand exposure to hospitality operations and event management; educational workshops demonstrating advanced teaching techniques and resources; sessions on industry trends, best practices and CHEI success stories; and networking with colleagues and industry leaders. Teachers also completed hospitality certification courses offered by American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) and Smith Travel Research (STR). School presidents, government officials and leaders from Marriott International, including Craig S. Smith, president and managing director of Asia Pacific, joined attendees for various conference sessions to network and show their support.

“We understand the power of education to change young peoples’ lives,” said Anne Gunsteens, executive director of The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation. “We were delighted to celebrate with the teachers and industry leaders in China who have contributed greatly to CHEI’s success. It was exciting to hear first-hand about the impact that CHEI is having on hospitality education.”

“CHEI is successful because it focuses first on teachers and is a collaboration between education and business,” said Carl H. Winston, managing director of CHEI and director of San Diego State University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. “Hospitality students in China are the beneficiaries of this great cooperation, as they become better prepared for exciting careers in hospitality and tourism.”

“We are honored to have participated in this year’s CHEI Teaching Conference,” said Smith. “As CHEI’s initial industry advisor, Marriott is committed to continuing to offer real-world experiences to Chinese educators to help them prepare students for rewarding hospitality and tourism careers.”

“I was so excited to attend this great CHEI Teaching Conference,” said Mr. Bao Yong, director of Anhui Career Guidance Center for Graduates and deputy director of Anhui College Students Work Research Committee, Anhui Provincial Education Bureau. “There are so many schools gathering in Ningbo, which demonstrates that the Marriott Foundation is focused on hospitality education and providing learning opportunities. This conference event will help schools pay more attention to hospitality students and their future education. We appreciate the Marriott Foundation for caring so much about hospitality education in China.”

“Through our cooperation with CHEI,” said Mr. Wang Yuan Hao, president of Anhui Zhong-ao Institute of Technology, “schools have closer relationships with the travel and tourism industry and have effectively reformed hospitality education, enhancing the students’ development. Please allow me to extend my heartfelt appreciation to CHEI. I truly wish that under the sunshine of CHEI, our teachers will be more engaging, our students will have brighter futures and hospitality education will become better and better.”

Over the next year, CHEI will continue to grow its programs by expanding into new provinces, hosting regional forums for teachers and administrators, enhancing teaching-learning resources and offering hospitality teaching certification workshops.

Marriott ‘BANG!’ Contest Offers Shanghai F&B Entrepreneurs ‘Opportunity of a Lifetime’

Bang!

Inviting restaurant and bar concepts for three Shanghai hotels with the promise: "You have the idea, we have the space”

Shanghai, June 2015
– Marriott International is offering ambitious Shanghai entrepreneurs a chance-of-a-lifetime to make their dream F&B concept come true.

The opportunity comes by entering the hospitality group’s ground-breaking global ‘BANG!’ competition. With the promise ‘You have the idea, we have the space’, Marriott International is inviting ideas for F&B concepts that will reinvent a lounge at Renaissance Shanghai Caohejing Hotel and JAVA+ venues at Marriott Hotel City Centre and Marriott Hotel Luwan.

A “first” in the hospitality industry, ‘BANG!’ is on the lookout for “passionate individuals with original, feasible and creative new ideas that reflect the F&B culture of the local authentic market”, said Ralph Frehner, Marriott International’s Vice President, Food and Beverage Operations, Asia Pacific.

Marriott International’s BANG! campaign made its debut in Asia at the JW Marriott Hotel Shenzhen in December 2014. It was won by Ms. Estella Pan, who recently opened a ‘Tofu Boutique’ with stylish, contemporary versions of tofu recipes passed down through her family.

“We are now looking for similarly creative and original concepts in Shanghai – with our biggest contest so far inviting concepts for three hotels,” said Mr. Frehner.

Details of competition, entry requirements and entry forms can be found online at www.startwithabang-shanghai.com/.

Contestants should initially submit innovative ideas with a short description and either 30-second video or 1 photo image (jpg or png file) on the campaign website. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit detailed business plans in early August 2015.

Each of the three properties will ultimately select three finalists to pitch at the ‘BANG! Ultimate Cook-Off’ – with live presentations of concepts and judges deciding which three finally get the go-ahead in mid-September. Four guest judges will include Brad Turley, Chef and Owner of Goga and Hai by Goga; Willy Trulas, owner-chef of El Willy,Elefante and Tomatito; Kelley Lee, owner of Liquid Laundry, Cantina Agave, Boxing Cat and Sproutworks; and Anthony Zhao, owner of Mi Xiang Yuanand host ofFood Hunters.

As was done in Shenzhen, Marriott International will fully support the Shanghai winners to nurture their concepts to success.

Extensive support and resources for each winner will include a start-up budget, professional advice from Marriott International, including regulatory and legal assistance, staffing, menu design, food safety and hygiene, marketing, and communications. The venue will also be provided rent-free for up to six months, and the winners will be compensated based on the performance of the outlet, working either independently or in partnership with the selected hotels earnings will be contractually agreed.

Peggy Fang Roe, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for Marriott International Asia Pacific said: “Marriott is renowned for innovative F&B projects and by embracing local talent, we continue to pioneer the way our guests eat and discover.”

The ‘BANG!’ campaign pays homage to a newlywed couple who opened a small A&W® root beer stand with just nine seats and “five-cent frosty mugs” in Washington DC in 1927. Those young entrepreneurs, J. Willard and Alice Marriott, laid the foundations for Marriott International, one of the most successful hospitality companies in the world.

The campaign name BANG! symbolizes energy, impact, dynamism and power. The Chinese translation '棒!" has a similar pronunciation, meaning synergy with excellence and greatness.

Marriott International and Yao Foundation Aim High for Supporting Education in Rural China

Building Hope School at 4,000 Meters above the Sea Level and arguably the World’s Highest Computer Lab and Library

Sichuan, China, June 10, 2015 – A delegation from Marriott International and the Yao Foundation recently traveled to southwest China to visit and celebrate the renovations underway at The Sela Marriott – Yao Foundation Hope Primary School.  The school is located at 4,000 meters above the sea level in Sela village within Daocheng, the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province.  This is the second of the seven school projects supported by Marriott International and the Yao Foundation. Marriott International’s cash and in-kind contributions toward the reconstruction will help support a better study environment for the school’s 180 students.

The 37-person delegation included senior executives and associates of Marriott International, representatives of the China Youth Development Foundation and the Yao Foundation as well as key media.  The infrastructure of the school has been challenged by resource scarcity, its remote location and the physical environment.

During the visit, the delegation built a computer lab with Internet connectivity and a library for the school. Marriott International associates and the public in China also gathered and donated 3,000 books to supply the school’s library.  In view of the altitude of the school, this computer lab as well as the library will possibly be the highest ones in the world. Construction of a new teaching building and playground is scheduled to begin during the next phase of renovations in 2016.

Virtually meet Yao Ming at the Computer labThe delegation also made arrangements to connect the students with the world. The school’s students are from the families of farmers or herdsmen who live nearby, and are mostly Tibetan Minority.  In the computer lab, the students had the chance to virtually meet Yao Ming, former basketball player and founder of the Yao Foundation, via video conferencing. In addition, Marriott’s delegates brought along digital devices that transported the students to a virtual travel experience. By simply holding a tablet in front of them or by wearing a virtual reality goggle set, the students enjoyed fully immersive virtual reality footage of diverse and inspiring parts of the world, including famous world landmarks, oceans and wildlife habitats with elephants and giraffes. The virtual experience was made possible by the iconic flagship brand Marriott Hotels, and gave the students a chance to “Travel Brilliantly”.

“Our collaboration with the Yao Foundation resonates with the core values of Marriott International that have sustained our company for more than eight decades – We open doors to a world of opportunity.  Together with the Yao Foundation, we strive to keep on creating opportunities for the children in rural China. We are delighted to see that our works grow from strength to strength and now bear fruit in Sela, bringing real benefits to the school students there, ” said Simon Cooper, President and Managing Director of Marriott International Asia Pacific.

Mr. Cooper added that when Marriott International called for volunteers amongst its associates in China to support this visit and donate books for building the library, the response was tremendous. This reflects that the company’s “Spirit to Serve” culture is widely supported by its associates.

During the virtual video conversation with students Yao Ming said: “I am most happy to see and chat with you. I hope you all will enjoy using this computer lab and the small library. I also look forward to seeing the completion of the new teaching building for your school, and wish you all healthy and happy growth.”

Marriott International and the Yao Foundation have been working together since 2013 to support rural education in China. Through fund-raising activities with its business partners and clients, Marriott is donating a total of RMB 13 million (approximately USD2,000,000) by 2018 to the Yao Foundation to establish seven hope schools, provide supporting resources and organize five Yao Foundation Hope Primary School Basketball Seasons.
