Checking Out of Work and Checking In for Fun: Survey Says...Stressed Out America is Ready for Vacation (If They'd Only Take It!)

De-Stress For Less EventMarriott Caribbean & Mexico Resorts’ “De-Stress for Less” Event Provides Antidote for Tense Travelers During April’s National Stress Awareness Month.

NEW YORK – Is America too stressed out? The answer is a resounding yes, but new research says a vacation provides hope for frazzled folks if they will only take the time to do it.

According to a survey of more than 1,400 travelers conducted by Marriott Caribbean & Mexico Resorts in conjunction with April’s National Stress Awareness Month, an overwhelming majority of Americans view a vacation as the antidote to reduce their work life stress, but many of them are not utilizing all of their available days.

The survey found that 72% of respondents said they plan a vacation to specifically de-stress and forget the daily grind, with the majority citing tension in the workplace ahead of concerns about finances as the greatest source of daily pressure. Yet one third of respondents admitted they did not utilize all of their available vacation time.

Still, according to the survey, vacation provides an invaluable way to reconnect with loved ones…or maybe even a dream celebrity. Respondents said spending more intimate time with their partner was the number one activity they do more of during vacation than in their everyday lives, followed by eating and reading. Just for fun, the question was posed asking with what celebrity they would most want to relax during vacation and Academy Award winner Halle Berry topped the list ahead of Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Denzel Washington.

In order to provide the antidote for stressed out vacationers, the eight exclusive Marriott Caribbean & Mexico Resorts are offering travelers a variety of ways to reduce tension and relax while on vacation. Guests can worry less about money and focus more on fun with the Collection’s special “De-Stress For Less Event” during the month of April that provides guests with 20% - 30% off leisure rates. To take advantage of this special offer, bookings must be complete before April 30, 2013 for travel between April 15, 2013 and August 31, 2013, with a minimum two-night stay required. Travelers must use the promotional code ‘X32’ when making a reservation.*

By popular demand, the resort collection is helping reduce stress for guests on property by extending their innovative “Braincation Zones” throughout the month of April. Introduced in December and originally only scheduled to run through the winter months, the Braincation tech-free zones have proven to be a favorite spot for those guests wishing to enjoy some “digital detox.” The zones operate on the honor system with signs indicating an electronics-free environment to encourage guests to disconnect, relax and enjoy peaceful reading, conversation or other tech-free pursuits.

With locations in seven relaxing and idyllic destinations, all Marriott Caribbean & Mexico Resorts are naturally designed to help guests unwind. Each provides opportunities for guests to lower their tension levels through a variety of activities and services during National Stress Awareness Month and beyond, including:

Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino

According to Michelle Bozoki, Director of Marketing and eCommerce for Marriott and Renaissance Caribbean and Latin America Resorts, both the popularity of the Braincation Zones and the stress awareness survey showed that, for most travelers, vacation time was a crucial, and increasingly rare, opportunity to reduce stress built up over the course of the year.

“Stress is a challenge for all of us, whether in the workplace or at home,” said Bozoki. “With the majority of those we surveyed referencing vacation time as their best opportunity to forget about the daily grind, it’s more important than ever that we deliver the most relaxing and rejuvenating experiences available. We’ve seen guests utilizing our Braincation Zones as a sort of oasis of tranquility and our hope is that they will continue to enjoy these zones and utilize our resorts as a way to check their tensions at the door, spend quality time with their loved ones, and have a completely stress-free experience in paradise.”

In Haiti, Digicel and Marriott Break Ground on More than Just a Hotel

Rendering of Port-au-Prince Marriott HotelProperty Brings 200 Jobs and Economic Vitality to Haiti Three Years After Quake.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti: Digicel and Marriott International (NYSE: MAR) today broke ground on the $45 million 175-room Marriott Hotels & Resorts brand hotel in the Turgeau area of Port-au-Prince, with opening expected in early 2015, making it the first four-star branded hotel in Haiti.

Haiti GroundbreakingAt a ceremony to mark the occasion, Marriott International’s President and Chief Executive Officer Arne Sorenson was joined by Digicel Chairman and Founder Denis O’Brien as well as the Minister of Tourism Stéphanie Balmir Villedrouin.
[Photo: Denis O'Brien, Digicel Chairman and Founder; Colm Delves, Group CEO of Digicel; Stephanie Balmir Villedrouin, Minister of Tourism, Haiti; Arne Sorenson, President and CEO, Marriott International.]

Digicel Group is responsible for designing and building the hotel and chose Marriott International’s signature Marriott Hotels & Resorts brand as its operating partner under a long-term management agreement. In addition to creating over 200 new hospitality jobs in Haiti, Marriott will invest in workforce training to benefit the country’s tourism sector.

Kier is the main contractor chosen for the hotel project and Turgeau Developments SA is the operating company, in which Digicel is the investment partner.

The hotel sets a new standard of excellence for the growing number of business travelers coming to Haiti, combining a friendly, professional and safe environment and offering the exceptional service that Marriott International offers worldwide in all of its properties. The hotel is especially suitable for business meetings, conferences and events and will feature the most up-to-date facilities in the city. The ballroom will comfortably accommodate around 380 people for dining and around 500 theatre-style.

The 175-room Marriott Hotel Port-au-Prince will include five suites, a casual restaurant with private dining area, fitness center, swimming pool and a great room lobby that inspires creativity, productivity and social interaction with its conveniently dispersed zones including a bar and lounge. The property will also have a gift shop and marketplace and will offer guests 24 hour room service, WiFi and secure parking.

Digicel Group and its Chairman, Denis O’Brien, are committed to attracting foreign direct investment to Haiti and to helping the country rebuild in the wake of the January 2010 earthquake. Mr. O’Brien is Founder and Patron of the Digicel Foundation which to date has constructed 100 schools in Haiti. Further, as the Chairman of the Clinton Global Initiative’s Haiti Action Network, Mr. O’Brien has been instrumental in driving the activity of 80 support organizations in Haiti to deliver on their commitments and in reconstructing the iconic Iron Market in Port-au-Prince.

Marriott International meanwhile aspires to have a signature hotel in every major capital city in the countries where it operates while being instrumental in stimulating business and attracting leisure visitors to Haiti. Marriott took on this project with particular reference to its thousands of Haitian associates who work in its U.S. hotels and urged the company to do what it did best and open a hotel in Haiti. Marriott will also use the Port-au-Prince location as a center for hotel training for local staff, helping to ensure that international standards of excellence are met and maintained.

Commenting on the project, Digicel Chairman Denis O’Brien, said; “We’re delighted to be helping to bring the world-leading Marriott Hotels & Resorts brand to Haiti.  Not only will this be a solution to the lodging issues in the city, it will also create jobs, attract foreign visitors and communicate a positive outlook for the future of Haiti. Haiti is a great place to invest and do business and I encourage others to take a look at the opportunities here.”

“We saw the need for a leading hotel brand in Haiti to accommodate the wave of travelers coming to do business in the country," said Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Officer at Marriott International.  “We believe we can make a difference in Haiti by creating jobs and developing the human talent that can help lift this country over time back to its rightful place as one of the top destinations in the Caribbean. We are working with the Ministers of Tourism and Vocational Education on how we can support existing institutions to raise the quality of hospitality training.”

Prime Minister of Haiti, Laurent Lamothe, commented; "The presence of the world-leading Marriott Hotels & Resorts brand in Haiti is another clear indicator that Haiti is serious about attracting foreign direct investment. I would like to commend both Marriott International and Digicel Group on their tireless commitment to Haiti and on making their vision a reality. This is a huge vote of confidence in the future of Haiti and I look forward to the Marriott Hotel Port au Prince opening its doors in 2015."

Marriott Strengthens Focus on the Caribbean and Latin America by Naming First-Ever Regional President

Craig SmithCompany cites strong local economies, growing middle class and an uptick in travel to and from the region as reasons for increased interest.

Recognizing the increasing importance of the Caribbean and Latin America as a destination and source market for its portfolio of hotels, Marriott International (NYSE:MAR) has named company veteran Craig S. Smith, currently vice president and chief operations officer for Asia Pacific, as its first-ever president for the Caribbean and Latin America.

Smith, who as the son of a diplomat resided in several Latin American countries, began his career with Marriott International nearly a quarter-century ago, serving as general manager of properties in Brazil, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Peru before spearheading the company’s expansion into Asia. He is fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese.

The year 2012 saw the opening or conversion of 8 hotels in 5 countries, among them Mexico City’s first Courtyard by Marriott brand hotel at the International airport as well as the much-anticipated JW Marriott Cusco, strategically located at the gateway to the archaeological site of Machu Picchu.

Marriott International expects to double its footprint in the Caribbean and Latin America by 2017, adding 14,000 jobs and over 70 additional properties across 10 lodging brands in 26 countries and territories.

Smith, President of the Caribbean and Latin America at Marriott International.

Entering the Caribbean and Latin America in 1990 with the openings of the 450-room Marriott CasaMagna Resort in Cancun and the 433-room Marriott CasaMagna Resort in Puerto Vallarta, both in Mexico, Marriott International is now represented in the region by 74 hotels in 25 countries and territories, offering more than 18,000 rooms and spanning nine lodging brands: The Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts in the luxury tier; Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International’s signature brand; Renaissance Hotels and the Autograph Collection in the lifestyle category; Courtyard by Marriott and Fairfield Inn in the moderately-priced tier; and Marriott Executive Apartments and Residence Inn by Marriott in the extended stay category. In addition, Marriott Vacation Club International, Marriott's timeshare ownership division, offers three resorts in two countries.

Situated on 1,400 acres of the former Laurance Rockefeller estate, the long awaited second Reserve, part of an exclusive collection of bespoke properties, will usher in a new level of luxury travel experiences for guests in the Western Hemisphere when it opens today.

A cherished destination, Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is an intimate retreat offering a true sense of barefoot elegance, blending Laurance Rockefeller’s novel environmental design philosophies and modern yet minimal décor. Created as an open-air enclave infused with references to the surrounding natural landscape and diverse culture, Dorado Beach is a true luxury sanctuary designed to allure the world’s most discerning travellers through a bevy of one-of-a-kind lifestyle experiences, including:

Accommodations
With 100 spacious guestrooms and 14 one-bedroom suites that sit directly onto the beach, guests can select from an exquisite collection of accommodations that allow the backdrop to take precedence through a complete indoor and outdoor experience. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors entirely disappear onto seamless ocean views, while outdoor shower gardens, indoor showers with deep soaking tubs, individual infinity-edge pools, rooftop pools and cabanas create an incomparable luxury experience.

Su Casa
Originally erected in the 1920s for the plantation land’s first owner, Clara Livingston, Su Casa’s storied grandeur now serves as a four-bedroom VIP villa overlooking the ocean. Paired with towering palm trees, expansive gardens, a private infinity edge pool and a spacious cigar veranda, the hacienda has been fully restored and modernized following a multimillion dollar restoration while preserving its legendary heritage and serene beauty.

Spa Botánico
Tucked away amid lush flora is Spa Botánico, a five-acre botanical sanctuary of pampering offering a holistic yet modern approach to beauty and wellness incorporating Manos Santos practices, ancient local healers often referred to as ‘Holy Hands’. Reflective of Dorado Beach’s lush surroundings, Spa Botánico blends a soothing natural environment inspired by these ancient Puerto Rican healing traditions, modern therapies and the finest quality of local botanicals to indulge the body, mind and spirit. Distinctive treatment facilities, warm and cool pools, waterfall showers, glass-walled treatment pavilions and open air Treehouse platforms create a relaxing state of well being among nature.

Mi Casa by José Andrés
For a world-class culinary experience, internationally acclaimed Chef José Andrés introduces his first restaurant outside the United States with Mi Casa. Inspired by Puerto Rico’s diverse culinary landscape, guests are treated to an artfully crafted menu of locally-caught seafood and avant-garde dishes. Chef Andrés will fuse his knowledge of sophisticated cooking and regional flavors to offer guests a truly exceptional culinary experience and a unique blend of Spanish and Puerto Rican flavors. The restaurant’s beverage selection mirrors its distinct cuisine showcasing an array of traditional and handcrafted cocktails, a portfolio of artisanal offerings and a robust international wine list complementing complex yet delicate flavors.

Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment
Designed for adults, families, and children, participants of Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment can discover Puerto Rico’s natural wonders both on land and sea, including coral reefs, a diversity of birds, wetlands, and traditional Taino culture through exciting and memorable adventures and activities, such as snorkeling, kayaking, hiking and exploring an archaeological site directly on property. Integrating the program’s environmentally-conscious philosophy into the building’s infrastructure, the Ambassador House is designed to adhere to the highest standards of the U.S. Green Building Council, with a variety of sustainable efforts including regionally-sourced materials, renewable energy, organic and sustainable finishes and furniture, and monitoring systems to reduce the buildings overall energy usage.

“As a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, the philosophy behind Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is to immerse guests into Puerto Rico’s rich history and extraordinary landscape while providing an unparalleled luxury travel experience unlike any other,” said Herve Humler, president and COO for The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. “Reflective of Laurance Rockefeller’s vision from more than 50 years ago of a natural sanctuary, the island is a combination of historical charm and metropolitan life blending serenity and a pristine backdrop – a perfect location for the Ritz-Carlton Reserve experience,” he added.

The guest journey begins at the arrival pavilion, incorporating stylistic influences of contemporary soft structures and lush, indigenous landscape. Framed by striking ocean views, guests ascend the luxury hotel’s entryway to the arrival pavilion consisting of multiple small buildings separated to preserve the land’s original trees. Connected walkways raised above sunken gardens create a tropical forest floor punctuated by restful hanging beds, so every view is of both the land and sea and a seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor environment.

To complement an unparalleled luxury experience, guests are invited to revel in a magical social event at the iconic Surf Room, a newly designed reconstruction from the original Rockefeller era. Beautifully appointed floor-to-ceiling glass windows enhance sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea which open out to an outside terrace set directly upon sand, creating an enchanting background perfect for any special occasion.

In addition to Mi Casa, Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve offers three dining venues, including Positivo Sand Bar, situated parallel to the ocean offering magnificent vantage points with al fresco cuisine and refreshing cocktails; Encanto Beach Club Bar & Grill, an open-air bistro with freshly grilled cuisine for lunch and Asian-style selections for dinner; and La Cocina Gourmet, an outpost providing Puerto Rican coffees, homemade gelatos and local delights.

To experience the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in the Americas and the Caribbean’s premier luxury resort at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, high season rates at the resort start at $1,499 per night, setting a new luxury benchmark for the Caribbean. Marriott International Strengthens Focus on Mexico by Naming First-Ever Market Vice President

Kevin SchwabRecognizing the importance of Mexico as a destination and source market for its global portfolio of hotels, Marriott International (NYSE:MAR) has named company veteran Kevin Schwab, who has spent more than a third of his 30-year career in Mexico, as the country’s first-ever market Vice President.

“Mexico is one of Marriott International’s largest, most important and dynamic international markets, making the country well positioned for a dedicated manager to promote further growth and ensure the service and quality levels of our brands remain best-in-class. Kevin’s commitment to operational and service excellence and his deep knowledge of the Mexico market make him an excellent fit”, said David Grissen, President of the Americas at Marriott International.

Schwab joined Marriott in 1982 as a sous chef at the Biscayne Bay Marriott in Miami. In 1988, he was promoted to executive chef at the Crystal City Marriott just outside Washington, DC and was subsequently named executive chef and director of restaurants and bars at the CasaMagna Marriott Cancun. In 1996, Schwab was director of food and beverage at the JW Marriott Mexico City and the Marriott Mexico City Airport. Two years later, he was promoted to director of operations at the Marriott Mexico City Airport and then to hotel general manager.

In 2000, Schwab was named area director of operations for the Caribbean and Latin America headquarters in Weston, Florida. He then returned to Latin America to serve as general manager at the Panama City Marriott, JW Marriott Mexico City and The Ritz-Carlton San Juan Hotel before serving a stint in Asia as vice president and managing director of The Ritz-Carlton Macao Studio City.

Most recently, Kevin served successfully as vice president and general manager of the Aruba Marriott Resort: he was named general manager of the year, his property was the first outside the United States to win Marriott’s coveted Breakthrough Leadership Training award, and he was instrumental in the successful launch of the training program throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.

Marriott and Renaissance Caribbean & Mexico Resorts Offering Tech-Free Zones for Travelers Who Crave a Braincation

BraincationNew survey shows travelers ready for some “Digital Detox” on their vacations.

For everyone who has ever had to deal with someone talking loudly into a cell phone while they were trying to relax, or felt pressured to be connected 24/7 to their job or elsewhere, The Marriott and Renaissance Caribbean & Mexico Resorts collection is offering a solution.

The collection of nine exclusive resorts in seven locations across the Caribbean and Mexico will offer new optional “Braincation” tech-free zones beginning in December and running throughout the winter months. Guests wishing to enjoy some “digital detox” can retreat to a Braincation zone at each resort where they can enjoy peaceful relaxation with no cell phones or electronic devices in use.  The Braincation zones will operate on the honor system and signs indicating an electronics-free environment will be designed to encourage guests to disconnect, relax and enjoy peaceful reading, conversation or other tech-free pursuits.

According to Michelle Bozoki, Director of Marketing and eCommerce for Marriott and Renaissance Caribbean and Latin America Resorts, a recent survey conducted by the resort collection asked more than 1,000 travelers how they deal with the demands of staying digitally connected to their social media, work and family while traveling.

“We wanted to find out how travelers felt about being constantly connected and whether or not they felt they could fully relax during their vacation,” said Bozoki. “The majority of respondents felt that staying connected to work added to their stress while vacationing and reported instances of being annoyed by mobile device abuse such as loud cell phone conversations. Our Braincation zones are an opportunity for those guests who just want to take a little break from electronics to find a place to retreat, relax and disconnect for awhile.”

Results from the survey included:
• 85% of respondents said they had experienced being annoyed by someone talking loudly into their cell phone when traveling
• 50% of respondents reported checking their emails and voicemails multiple times per day while on vacation
• 39% reported checking their emails and voicemails at least once per day during their trip
• 36% said they check their emails and voicemails on the beach
• 30% provide their cell phone numbers to clients while on vacation
• 31% admitted to being tempted to throw their mobile device into the ocean

Perhaps as a sign of the times and the acceptance of the digital age, only 15% of those surveyed said they felt being connected bothered their spouse, partner or fellow traveler.

Social media usage was a main digital source for the survey respondents:
• 44% reported connecting to their social channels while vacationing
• 82% utilized their social channels to keep in touch with family and friends
• 66% utilized their social channels to upload upload and share photos via Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest, etc.
• 64% update their status on Facebook or tweet via Twitter
• 64% use their mobile device to check-in to a location or search nearby options

The survey was conducted with 1,184 respondents.  Fifty-three percent of respondents were male and 47% female.

According to Bozoki, the resort collection provides Wi-Fi and other modern tech tools to allow guests to stay as connected as they want to be, but the Braincation tech-free zones will give guests the opportunity for a personal, rather than digital connection.

“Our resorts are located in some of the most beautiful settings in the world and we provide an escape from the stresses of work and today’s hectic lifestyles,” said Bozoki. “Our hope is that we can encourage guests to take some time out for themselves and appreciate both the natural beauty of their environment and, more importantly, have a human connection with those traveling with them.”

The Marriott and Renaissance Caribbean & Mexico Resorts Collection include:
• Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino
• CasaMagna Marriott Cancun Resort
• CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa
• Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort & Emerald Casino
• Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort
• Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort
• Renaissance Aruba Resort and Casino
• JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa
• St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino
