Courtyard Embarks on Yearlong Road Trip

Courtyard@ Marriott-Richmond020

First Stop: SXSW

Bethesda, Md., March 10, 2014—Courtyard by Marriott is packing its bags and taking off on a year-long road trip with its newest program, “Courtyard @,” that provides travelers at big event destinations with what they need for a successful trip.

Courtyard@ 1First stop is the 2014 South by Southwest (SXSW) conference in Austin, TX, as “Courtyard @” delivers a mobile getaway for frenzied attendees seeking a networking space that enables them to be productive at the fun but often space restricted festival. The “Courtyard @” experience at SXSW is modeled to showcase the brand’s next generation guest room. While relaxing, guests can caffeinate their body, juice up their phone and recharge their mind in preparation for their next event.

Over the weekend, “Courtyard @ SXSW” treated conference attendees with a special appearance by internet phenomenon Sam Griner, better known as “Success Kid.” The now six-year-old Griner reprised his famous fist-clenching baby photo pose that improbably went from an online family photo album into a viral symbol of success. SXSW attendees lined up to pose with “Success Kid” as Courtyard then enabled attendees to create their own custom meme images.

“Courtyard @” offers a peek into the brand’s innovative next generation guest room featuring its custom LoungeAroundTM sofa and ottoman along with a tech drop and much more.  From complimentary drinks to productive work space, Courtyard offers SXSW attendees an alternative that will help them maximize their time at the conference. The space can be reserved in 30 minute increments at Courtyard.com/sxsw at no charge and runs from March 7-10.

“Courtyard is where it’s at. We’re checking in to all of the coolest events alongside our guests,” said Janis Milham, senior vice president of Modern Essentials and Extended Stay brands at Marriott International. “With nearly 1000 hotels, we are everywhere you want to be and Courtyard @ allows us the flexibility to bring elements of our innovation and hospitality to where travelers need it most.”

Courtyard San Diego Rancho Bernardo Launches the MindClick Global Rest Better Sustainability Program

Renovated Flagship Location to Showcase Eco-friendly Initiatives to Enhance Overall Guest Experience

San Diego - October 23, 2013 – Courtyard by Marriott and MindClick Global, a leader in supply chain sustainability performance and sourcing solutions, today announced the launch of the Rest BetterTM sustainability program, a MindClick initiative to educate travelers on the environmental impact of implementing green hotel purchasing practices.

“As a Marriott International brand, Courtyard places a high precedent on sustainability," said Mari Snyder, vice president Social Responsibility & Community Engagement. “Partnering with MindClick Global to launch the Rest BetterTM program at our renovated hotel in Rancho Bernardo goes hand-in-hand with Marriott’s ‘Spirit to Preserve’philosophy and demonstrates the ways we are taking better care of our guests and the environment through our purchasing choices.”

Rest Better™ :  Understanding the Consumer Connection

Rest BetterTM combines online and onsite marketing and social media messaging to inform guests of the health, community and environmental benefits of furniture and equipment used in the Courtyard Rancho Bernardo’s recent renovation.

Powered by MindClick Global’s Sustainability Index, the Rest BetterTM program also highlights the general sustainability initiatives being implemented across the hotel industry to meet the increasing consumer demand for sustainable business practices.

“A truly green hotel industry begins at the supply chain with the sourcing of products that deliver a better guest experience and make a positive contribution to both the environment and the community,” said JoAnna Abrams, CEO of MindClick Global. “Through our supplier Sustainability Index and a deep understanding of consumer engagement with eco-friendly practices, MindClick Global can help guests of the Marriott and other future hotel brands enjoy the benefits to their wellbeing and the environment.”

MindClick Global’s Sustainability Index rates supply chain sustainability based on established global standards, including those published by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), National Standards Foundation International (NSF) and the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design (LEED) among others.

Courtyard San Diego Rancho Bernardo: Creating a Sustainable Guest Experience
The recently renovated Courtyard San Diego Rancho Bernardo in San Diego, California features suppliers carefully selected by the Courtyard by Marriott brand and verified through MindClick Global’s Sustainability Index.

Early indicators show the initiatives and program are increasing guest satisfaction—results which could have a ripple effect of what it means for the hospitality industry’s continued efforts to green their supply chain.

“Consumers are increasingly health conscious and environmentally aware, and industry research proves they prefer to support companies, products and services that share those values,” said Dave Lippert, vice president, Architecture & Construction Procurement for Marriott International. “In fact, according to a 2012 study of 5,000 Expedia consumers, 93 percent of travelers surveyed would choose a hotel based upon its use of sustainable design and furnishings over a comparable property emphasizing operational sustainability, such as energy savings and water reduction.”

“We know today’s guests expect healthier alternatives and demonstrated social and environmental responsibility,” said Craig Amos, executive vice president of Capital Investments at Apple REIT Seven, the hotel’s owner. “The MindClick Sustainability Index, supported by the Rest BetterTM program, helps us to efficiently source sustainable products and communicate our accomplishments with our customers.”

Examples of products and furnishings highlighted in the Rest BetterTM program include wall coverings, guest room carpet and conference room tables made from recycled materials, as well as furniture manufactured using sustainably harvested wood and toxin-free materials at production facilities within 100 miles of the hotel.

Party Around the World with Courtyard by Marriott

Courtyard 30thHong Kong, Doha, Berlin, Mexico City, Atlanta Host 30th Anniversary Celebration

BETHESDA, MD - Courtyard, the brand that forever changed the hotel industry by pioneering the upper moderate tier of the hospitality industry in 1983, celebrates turning 30, with nearly 1,000 hotels in 38 countries and more than 30,000 associates.  The largest brand by number of hotels in the Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE: MAR) portfolio, Courtyard is embracing its leadership role and celebrating its heritage with guests and customers across the world at five spectacular events in Hong Kong, Doha, Berlin, Mexico City and Atlanta.

“Launching the Courtyard brand was our biggest risk and also our biggest reward,” said Bill Marriott, Marriott International’s Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board.  “I’m so proud of what Courtyard has become but even more proud of where it is taking our industry.”

Courtyard’s continued growth and success is attributed to its understanding of business travelers. Through three decades, it has responded to the evolving needs of this important group of guests and continues to do so with its Courtyard Refreshing Business repositioning and its newly introduced Cynergy room design.

“Thirty years ago, our hotels catered to guests who were all about work and more work. We have innovated steadily to meet our guests’ changing needs and their desire for more options and flexibility during their stay. The response has been significant,” he added.

Courtyard’s entrepreneurial spirit has kept it at the forefront of innovation through the last three decades. It was the first brand to launch a digital lobby concierge, namely the GoBoards® as well as the first in the hospitality industry to offer calorie counts in its Bistro. Global expansion has led the brand to develop international prototype rooms and design directions in four regions. This has allowed the brand to maintain its relevancy as well as to ensure efficient business models for its owners.

“Courtyard continues to lead and define the segment year after year. We understood what our guests wanted 30 years ago and we understand them now,” said Janis Milham, senior vice president, Marriott Modern Essentials and Extended Stay Brands. “We are committed to being the segment leader for the future and continue to break new ground to meet the needs of the next generation of guests.”

According to Milham, significant growth for Courtyard lies abroad, and the brand will continue to design and operate hotels that appeal culturally to regional guests. Courtyard recently opened in Riyadh, Mexico City and Aberdeen and expects its first hotel in Brazil to open in 2014 and in Africa in 2015.

To mark the milestone occasion, Courtyard is hosting a rolling global anniversary party, with major guest and customer events in Hong Kong, Doha, Berlin, Mexico City and Atlanta, the location of the first Courtyard. In addition, at more than 800 hotels in North America, the first 30 guests checking in at a Courtyard will receive commemorative Courtyard t-shirts.  In social media, those who celebrate the same birthday as Courtyard will also receive a surprise gift. During this momentous occasion for the brand, more than 30,000 associates will also be celebrating internally with cakes, balloons and other festivities. Follow hashtag #Courtyard30 to join in the global event.

The Courtyard by Marriott brand features hotels with a refreshing environment that helps guests stay connected, productive and balanced while traveling.  Intuitive services and design accommodate guests’ desire for choice and control and allow them to use the public space and guest rooms to meet all of their needs while on the road. With nearly 1,000 locations in 38 countries, Courtyard has more locations than any other Marriott International brand. For more information about the brand, visit www.courtyard.com.
