Renaissance New York Midtown Hotel Sets The Bar As The City’s First Living Digital Hotel

Renaissance New York Midtown Digital WallGroundbreaking Ambient Intelligence Technology Responds to Human Movement, Creating Innovative “Living” Hotel and Virtual Concierge Experiences Inside, While a Four-Story LED Clock at the Top of the Building Enhances the Skyline

New York, NY, February 2, 2016 – The Renaissance New York Midtown Hotel, set to open in spring 2016, will become New York City’s first multi-sensory, interactive “living” hotel.  Created with the award-winning digital design firm Réalisations Inc. Montreal, Renaissance will bring to life technology not yet seen in any other New York hotel, creating corridors that come alive with human interaction and digital artwork that changes with every visit.

Renaissance- New York Midtown Hotel interactive wallGuests and visitors entering the hotel from either 34th or 35th Streets will interact with stunning digital displays projected along the corridor, a passage which spans the length of the block. The display does not change on its own, it only responds to human movement, and the interaction between guests and the wall creates a visual tapestry of subtle, organic graphics. In producing this ambient intelligence, an environment that is sensitive and responsive to the presence of people, Réalisations Inc. Montreal utilized a variety of technologies including reflective wallpaper, motion detectors, projectors and 3D cameras to capture and project data and movement occurring in the corridor.  The result was a “living,” interactive wall, which showcases the vision of the digital future.

Renaissance New York Midtown Hotel - Club LoungeAt the elevator bank near the 34th Street entrance, guests will find specially-curated digital imagery featuring local artists and neighborhood experiences, showcasing the ever-changing tapestry of the city and the energy of the surrounding Garment District.  Timed to mirror the opening and closing of the elevators, the projected digital displays will always be evolving, to offer surprising moments every time a guest steps in or out.

“The real-time technology used in this hotel is groundbreaking and is the future of the digital world,” said Roger Parent, president, Réalisations Inc. Montreal, known for his work at the Metropolitan Opera, Cirque du Soleil, and most recently the See Forever Theater at One World Trade Center.  “It’s been rewarding to work with partners who have allowed us to push the boundary of the digital landscape and explore what can be done with the ambient intelligent technology. Together our goal was to create a ‘living hotel,’ one that can offer a different experience on every visit, yet still allows guests to feel rooted to New York City and the local scene.”

Part of the “living” element of the guest experience will be the hotel’s virtual concierge, located in an alcove between the 34th Street entrance and the elevators.  A large screen comes to life when a user steps onto words projected on the floor, activating a wealth of information including local cuisine, live music, theater, shopping and other hyper-local activities. Tied to the hotel’s Navigator program and curated in collaboration with Time Out New York, users will be able to select their desired activity and location by activating various areas of interest with just a point of their finger.

Another highly-anticipated digital aspect of the hotel is the four-story LED clock at the top of the building. Facing north and south, the clock’s imagery will continuously change so that the illustration changes every second for a total of 86,400 images every day. Various eclectic styles and colors will enhance the city skyline and bring the hotel to life for all to enjoy.  A replica clock, mirrored in real time, is located over the 34th Street entrance for guests to view as they walk into the hotel.

Renaissance Hotels and Marriott’s Content Studio’s Original Short Film “Business Unusual” Premiered at the Newly Transformed Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel

Businss Unusual

Bethesda, MD – January 12, 2016– Renaissance Hotels and Marriott’s Content Studio premiered their short film “Business Unusual”, with a global YouTube launch followed by a screening and party at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel last evening.  The multi-platform, all-screens distribution strategy includes limited theatrical release, inside Renaissance Hotels’ guest rooms, as well as on Marriott.com and to the nearly 55 million Marriott Rewards members.

The 12-minute film, shot throughout Chicago and on location at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel, boasts an impressive cast including Yoshua Sudarso (“Power Rangers Dino Charge”), Jason Gerhardt (“General Hospital,” ABC's “Mistresses”), Grant Bowler (“Defiance,” “True Blood,” and “Ugly Betty”), Tia Carrere (“Wayne’s World”) and Brian Poli-Dixon (artist, actor, and former NFL receiver). Featured cameos from Chicago natives include former White Sox player Ozzie Guillen and the Chicago-based band The O’My's (Chicago-based band) and the world's best parkour athletes and dancers from Substance Over Hype. The film’s executive producers are David Beebe, Dan Vinh, Daniel Cabrera, Scott Ehrlich, William Spencer and Caine Sinclair. Click here to view “Business Unusual”.

“With ‘Business Unusual’ we hope to encourage our audience to explore the city that they are visiting to uncover and discover new things about the city, as well as themselves,” said David Beebe, Vice President, Global Creative + Content Marketing, for Marriott International and its portfolio of 19 brands.  “The film is engaging content that will inspire them to delve deeper within themselves to find success.”

“Renaissance Hotels is designed for today’s business travelers and our goal is to create experiences for them to connect with the city that they are visiting,” said Dan Vinh, Vice President Marketing, Renaissance Hotels. “‘Business Unusual’ highlights the heart of Chicago and allows our guests the chance to acquaint themselves with all that the city has to offer.”

Situated on the banks of the Chicago River, the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel captures a spirit of wanderlust that inspires guests to explore the neighborhood and discover the unexpected. Indigenous touch points are infused into the design of the new Lobby, Marriott Rewards® Elite Club Lounge, The Artist Studio, Staytion Market and Bar, and The Library to capture the high energy, whimsical character and ebullience of Chicago. A high-low design approach pairs luxurious high-end finishes with raw, gritty, concrete and graffiti-inspired surfaces. Experiential works of art by homegrown artists are placed to intrigue; CTA bus-inspired windows from the early 1900s serve as a gateway into the chef’s display kitchen at Staytion Market and Bar; wallpaper and elevator lobby artwork illustrate the Chicago “L” map, immersing guests in the heart of the city’s transportation system; a specially commissioned artwork made of colored pencils melds into a local taxicab and even the lobby pillars are works of art, each featuring local images, which when viewed at a certain vantage point blends together harmoniously to form a single scene, encouraging guests to change their perspective and to look – and look again.  The multi-million dollar renovation is part of the globally recognized Renaissance Hotel brand’s focus on discovery, provoking both guests and locals’ interests to explore the Windy City.

To celebrate the film’s location- arguably one of the stars of the picture- the Renaissance Chicago Downtown hotel is currently offering two Business Unusual Movie Packages.  The first package includes a #5-9 Passport, inspired by the brand’s commitment of helping guests make the most of evenings, 5pm-9pm, plus a one-day pass on Chicago’s Mass Transit System. The #5-9 Passport includes exclusive access to discoveries featuring the best tastes, sights and sounds of the Windy City;  an in-room bar program where guests receive a bar kit including highball glasses, sphere ice molds, and other cocktail making accessories.

The second package is a Marriott Rewards Elite Offer and is available to Marriott Silver/Gold/Platinum members and features everything included in the first package, plus 3,000 Marriott Rewards points for the stay and is available on Marriott.com.

“Business Unusual,” written and directed by Daniel Malakai Cabrera & Caine Sinclair, is the third original short film produced by Marriott’s Content Studio, following the successful releases of “French Kiss” and “Two Bellmen.”  Post-production on “Two Bellmen Two,” the Content Studio’s fourth original short film, which was shot in Dubai at JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, the tallest hotel in the world, is underway. The studio has also produced two original YouTube Series for Marriott International, “Hot Shoppe” and “DO NOT DISTURB.” In addition, Renaissance Hotels launched season two of its “The Navigator Live” series in October, which is currently airing on AXS TV, www.youtube.com/renhotels, www.facebook.com/renhotels and in-room at Renaissance Hotels.

The original soundtrack and score for the “Business Unusual” film were composed and inspired by the musical cues throughout the film.  As an homage to the film’s location, local Chicago band The O’Mys, plus Los Angeles artists including 9 Theory, Alan Paris, Dawn Mitchele, Doobie Dalil, D-Rae, dUSTIN tAVELLA, Malakai, Open Optics, Scarub, Tensei, The Cosmic Sea and were featured.  The soundtrack will be available on all major digital distribution outlets including iTunes, Spotify, YouTube and Amazon. The album will also be available on SoundCloud as a free download through February 2016. The album was produced by Daniel Malakai Cabrera and Fingazz and was executive produced by David Beebe and Dan Vinh. Click here to listen to the “Business Unusual” soundtrack.

Renaissance Hotels and Marriott Content Studio Announce Latest Original Film “Business Unusual,” in Partnership with Substance Over Hype

Business UnusualShot at the Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel, the film will feature Tia Carrere, Yoshua Sudarso, Jason Gerhardt, Grant Bowler, and Brian Poli-Dixon

Bethesda, Md., October 13, 2015 – Renaissance Hotels and Marriott’s Content Studio have partnered with Substance Over Hype to produce a new comedy short film, “Business Unusual. “Business Unusual” will have a global multiplatform release in early 2016, including a limited theatrical release, YouTube posting and additional digital-platform rollout.

The 12-minute film, shot throughout Chicago and on location at the newly transformed Renaissance Chicago Downtown Hotel, boasts an impressive cast including Yoshua Sudarso (“Power Rangers Dino Charge”), Jason Gerhardt (“General Hospital,” ABC's “Mistresses”), Grant Bowler (“Defiance,” “True Blood,” and “Ugly Betty”), Tia Carrere (“Wayne’s World”) and Brian Poli-Dixon (artist, actor, and former NFL receiver). Featured cameos from Chicago natives include Ozzie Guillen (former White Sox player), The O’My's (Chicago-based band) and the world's best parkour athletes and dancers from Substance Over Hype. A custom soundtrack that features local Chicago artists including The O’My’s will also accompany the film.

On the heels of “French Kiss” and “Two Bellmen,” “Business Unusual,” written and directed by Daniel Malakai Cabrera & Caine Sinclair, is the third original short film produced by the Marriott Content Studio. The studio has also produced two original YouTube Series for Marriott International, “Hot Shoppe” and “Do Not Disturb.”  In addition, Renaissance Hotels is launching season two of its “Navigator Live” series October 21, with AXS TV. The show follows touring musicians such as Awolnation, A-Track and The Lone Bellow -- modern business travelers -- as they discover Dallas, Long Beach and D.C. during their Renaissance Hotels stays.

“Brands must stop interrupting what consumers are interested in and become what they are interested in, and short films driven by storytelling vs. advertising are just one of the many ways we are engaging with next generation travelers,” said David Beebe, Vice President, Global Creative + Content Marketing, for Marriott International and its portfolio of 19 brands. “Not only do the short films and other projects from the Marriott Content Studio engage an audience, they inspire them to travel, and drive revenue for our hotels, and we’ve found the right recipe for mixing art and commerce together to win the hearts, minds, and wallets of travelers globally.”

“Business Unusual” centers around two ad executives and former colleagues, having just arrived in Chicago to compete against each other in a pitch. A pompous character, Chip, delivers the first pitch and receives extremely positive feedback from the clients. Following Chip’s seemingly successful presentation, David, (a less seasoned entrepreneur) nervously begins to present his pitch-- when the client is suddenly called away to an emergency and is asked if he can finish the next day. David agrees and returns to his hotel. As he is anxiously preparing to revamp his pitch, the Navigator (Renaissance Hotels’ local concierge) persuades him to join other guests for an evening of discovery through beverage, food and local music in the hotel’s bar. Here he has a chance platonic encounter with a kind, wise, and successful woman named Ella. David finds his groove and is inspired to create an exceptionally fun and clever campaign, focused on the use of a Rube Goldberg machine that ultimately lands him the account. The Rube Goldberg machine in the film was designed by “America’s Got Talent” quarterfinalist Steve Price.

“Renaissance Hotels is designed for the today’s business travelers, who see travel as an opportunity to experience something new and unexpected, so they come away with a new perspective -- whether that’s from experiencing the local neighborhood around our hotel or simply stumbling into a live performance, a mixology demonstration or an art exhibit in the programmed public spaces,” said Dan Vinh, Vice President Marketing, Renaissance Hotels. “‘Business Unusual’ incorporates cameos with strong Chicago ties to demonstrate the importance of Renaissance Hotel’s passion for incorporating unexpected, indigenous and local elements into the guest experience.”

The film’s executive producers are David Beebe, Dan Vinh, Daniel Cabrera, Scott Ehrlich, William Spencer and Caine Sinclair.

“At Renaissance, we’re turning traditional conventions of business travel on their head,” said Dan Vinh, Vice President of Marketing, Renaissance Hotels. “The hotel’s new design elements have been created for our guests, who want their business trips to surprise with new discoveries and cultural experiences. The Next Gen mindset sees business travel as an opportunity to get out and explore a new city, so we want to create experiences – from intriguing design to regular insider’s evenings with local entertainment, art and design exhibits and culinary events – that they can participate in after working hours. The hotel’s opening block party with performances by Robin Thicke, Natalie La Rose, and HXLT, kicks off a summer of exciting events in Chicago and reinforces our commitment to providing guests around the world with compelling music and entertainment experiences.”

HXLTMerging the business of the Loop with the pleasure of State Street and Chicago’s Theater District, the hotel invites discovery at every turn. Located in the middle of the lobby will be the Renaissance Navigator, situated at the communal Navigator Table – a cheeky twist on the traditional concierge desk, designed as an interactive place to explore new ideas, touch and feel new technologies, or simply engage with the Renaissance Navigator on new finds that only a local would know.

Sair seating creates a perfect perspective for the hotel’s signature Renaissance Events, part of the brand’s long-standing multimedia entertainment program and its commitment to supporting emerging artists. ROBIN THICKE
Born in Los Angeles, Robin Thicke taught himself to play piano at the age of 12 and by 16 was writing and producing songs for top R&B artists. At the age of 21, he had written and produced songs on over 20 gold and platinum albums including Michael Jackson, Marc Anthony, Pink, Christina Aguilera and others. One year later he signed with Jimmy Iovine and Interscope records. Today, Robin has established himself as one of the most respected singer-songwriters in soul and R&B music. The musician and composer released his critically acclaimed debut album, "A Beautiful World," in 2003 under the name “Thicke.” The collection was followed by a succession of four critically acclaimed gold and platinum selling albums releases. The summer of 2013 marked the debut of Robin's highly anticipated new studio album, "Blurred Lines." The release quickly took the music world by storm and debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top 200 while, “Blurred Lines,” the single, set records around the world. It went to #1 in over 100 countries and had a record setting 12-week reign in the US at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and also broke radio records by climbing to #1 on 5 charts simultaneously (Top 40, Rhythm, Urban, Hot AC & Urban AC) – the first time this has ever been done by an artist. Robin continues to receive accolades for the album and single including three GRAMMY Award nominations, as well as four NAACP Image awards nominations.

NATALIE LA ROSE
Being bold is a big part of being an artist. You’ve got to be willing to act intrepidly at the right moments. Natalie La Rose knows just when to be bold. In 2011 while attending an ESPY Awards after party, she walked up to Flo Rida and told him they were going to work together. Struck by her charisma and confidence, the (intrigued) multi-platinum international superstar invited her to the studio the next day. Over the course of two years to follow, she performed alongside Flo across the globe at sold out shows. 2013 saw her officially ink a deal with his International Music Group (I.M.G.) label, formally solidifying their partnership.

However, that wasn’t the first time Natalie followed such an impulse. Born to Surinamese parents and raised in Amsterdam, she moved to Los Angeles alone at 20-years-old, pursuing her dream of becoming a singer and dancer. Inspired by everyone from Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson to Mariah Carey, she honed her vocal chops through years of diligent practice. That prowess led to a deal with Blackground Records/Interscope Records for her duo Amsterdam in 2010.

“The group didn’t work out, and no music was released,” she sighs. “It just wasn’t the right time. However, with Flo, everything felt right. We have such a great chemistry, and he’s given me an incredible launch pad for me and my songs.”

That music flaunts her immense voice with flourishes of both eighties and nineties R&B. It’s an instantly irresistible style. “I’m very inspired by pop and rhythm,” she goes on. “There’s a soulfulness and great groove though. Since I’m a dancer, it’s important for my music to have a nice beat.”

Her debut single for I.M.G./Republic Records “Somebody” [featuring Jeremih] will undoubtedly get the dance floor moving. Over smooth production from Future Classic, the song updates the melody from Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” for a new millennium. Natalie’s voice takes the spotlight in between a sexy hook from Jeremih.

“It’s a fun and funky song,” remarks Natalie. “It’s feel-good, and it reminds me of summertime. I love to be around people, have a great time, and dance. That’s what it stands for. While we were recording Jeremih happened to be in Miami for a Big Dreams for Kids Back to School Event and Flo invited him to the studio to sing on it. He nailed it on the first take!”

HXLT
Born in Chicago to a multi-ethnic musical family, HXLT was raised listening to Led Zeppelin, Smokey Robinson, 2Pac, The Clash, and countless other artists from various genres. He developed a love for art, culture and fashion at a young age, which paved the way for his future ventures in music and design.

HXLT started out rapping with his friends. He had a quick blow up early in his rap career, but was not yet fulfilled. He had interests in other types of music but found himself without the ability to make them. “I used to have tons of songs in my head, but since I couldn’t play anything well and I didn't know how to use programs I was never able to make them.” HXLT brought producer Le Fonz into the mix, and was finally able to compose the music he had in his head. HXLT ran into Kanye West at a venue in New York and was invited to a studio session. He shared his music with Kanye and the rest is history, HXLT signed to West’s G.O.O.D. record label in April of 2014.

HXLT is one of the few serious renaissance men in music. He’s a fighter, a formidable rapper, a director and a great entertainer. HXLT’s sound is a mix of melodic minimal chords, strings and guitars paired with hard and gritty beats. Heavily influenced by punk rock, gangster rap and everything in between, HXLT’s music is a collection of different tastes neatly blended to express his mixed background and innovative spirit.
